Friday and Saturday, June 27 and 28: Beatnik Sunset Strip Slide Show by Brian Chidester and Domenic Priore, Sunset Strip Music Festival (times and venues TBA) www.sunsetstripmusicfestival.com
Sunday, June 29, 7 p.m.: Love documentary "Love Story" and Gary McFarland documentary "This is Gary McFarland," Mods & Rockers Festival, The American Cinematheque at Egyptian Theater, 6712 Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood, California. (323) 466-3456 www.americancinematheque.com
"Riot on Sunset Strip" author Domenic Priore will host an evening of contemporary documentaries about very groovy music by Modern Jazz/Bossa Nova vibraphonist/arranger Gary McFarland, and the seminal Los Angeles psychedelic band Love. "Love Story" is by UK director Chris Hall, and features all original members of the band, circa their most compelling 1965-1968 times (through to their landmark "Forever Changes" album). Arthur Lee gives a tour through the bands' old pad, called The Castle, and there are also interviews with Bryan MacLean, Johnny Echols, Ken Forssi, Michael Stuart-Ware, Alban "Snoopy" Pfisterer and Tjay Cantrelli. "This is Gary McFarland" is by Seattle director Kristian St. Clair, who will be present for a Q&A before the film. Gary McFarland was featured on pages 134-135 of Dumb Angel #4: All Summer Long, as his music conjures up visions of exotic '60s beaches and celestial sun designs by Alexander Girard. Love's "Orange Skies" sounds much like a Gary McFarland record, so this will be a wholly fulfilling evening of ethereal music on film. It is also a real pleasure to be a part of the Egyptian's annual "Mods & Rockers Festival," which is always fun and well-attended every year.
See you sometime the weekend of June 26, 27, 28 and 29 . . .
