Beatnik Beach and Riot on Sunset Strip Slideshows
Saturday, February 9, 2008
10:00 a.m.

Los Angeles Public Library, Atrium Theatre
630 W. 5th Street
Los Angeles, CA 90071
(213) 228-7000

This Saturday morning, the Los Angeles Public Library (Downtown L.A.) and the Culinary Historians of Southern California will present Brian Chidester and Domenic Priore, with two slideshows in the Atrium Theatre series.

"Beatnik Beach" covers the Beat Generation coffeehouses, folk music venues and jazz nightclubs of the Greater Los Angeles area between 1956 and 1966.

"Sunset Strip '66" covers the outgrowth of that -- the teenage nightclubs that the Byrds, Love, the Doors, Buffalo Springfield, Frank Zappa's Mothers and many others broke out of.

Check out the insides (and exteriors) of all the spots you wish you could've gone to (swear) like the Venice West Cafe, Shelly's Manne-Hole, It's Boss, the Trip, Pandora's Box, the Hullabaloo, the Ash Grove, the Insomniac, plus the Lighthouse and Whisky a Go Go when they mattered.

The slideshows start at 10:30 a.m., and the event is free. Parking is one dollar on Saturdays, enter the library's parking lot on Flower Street.
