TIKI LUAU EVENT — 5:00 p.m. — Brian Chidester and Domenic Priore, editors of Dumb Angel No. 4 will host a table at the Egyptian Theatre Tiki Luau event. They join comedy/exotica bandleader King Kukulele with ukulele legend Bill Tapia, plus author/filmmaker Jeff "Beach Bum" Berry and Disney artist Kevin Kidney. The pre-show includes the short film Secret of Easter Island by Beach Bum Berry, followed by other short surprises in Tiki Cinema and the feature film: a rare 35 mm print of BIRD OF PARADISE, 1951, 20th Century Fox/Criterion, 100 min. The film stars Deborah Paget (Fritz Lang's THE TIGER OF ESCHNAPUR) in all her luscious beauty as Polynesian princess "Kalua," opposite Louis Jourdan (GIGI) and Jeff Chandler. Director Delmer Daves (3:10 TO YUMA) creates a wildly entertaining piece of 1950s Exotica laden with gorgeous locales (Hawaii doubles for the fictional South Seas island), volcanic danger and charming depictions of daily island life. After the film in the courtyard will be music, live hula dancers, a luau dinner and much, much more!!

The Derby nightclub building on the tract of land at Hillhurst Avenue and Los Feliz Boulevard started life in 1928 as lamella roofed, country colonial chicken inn called Willlard’s (Far Famed Chicken Steak Dinners) before becoming one of L.A.'s four Brown Derby restaurants in 1941. The building then was home to Michael's of Los Feliz serving "continental cuisine" to the grey-haired set from about 1960 until about 1992, when the Derby (named nostalgically) opened in that spot. Louise’s Trattoria set up shop as an intriguingly "attached" next-door neighbor.

Property has been purchased and redevelopment plan is being vetted through various committees.

The patio of Louise's is one of the most pleasant places to while away an afternoon. Altogether, the Derby/Louise’s combo makes a gentle, old-world, un-supersized presence on that intersection, which is about to be redeveloped into an 88-condominium, five-story, monster-structure with an architectural design best be described as Nouvelle Mar Vista. Not very fitting for our elegant tree lined Los Feliz Boulevard, and the gateway entrance into Griffith Park leading up to the iconic Griffith Park Observatory.

This is the first major intrusion of bad & ugly L.A. reality onto Hillhurst Avenue, but we have been holding our breath. The humongous billboard down the hill was the first domino to drop, but Los Feliz-ites had better wake up and smell the coffee because our quaint and genteel little 'hood is fodder for salivating developers who simply do not care.

If you agree with this point of view, please attend this meeting and speak your mind.
